Our traditional Indian medical system, mainly Ayurveda, offers a very holistic and personalized approach to various disorders. Although the genetic basis of muscular dystrophy, mainly DMD – a single gene disorder is widely known, the therapeutic approaches towards cure are still in the research phase. Treatment in general clinical terms seems to be a farfetched goal. Even if treatment options become available in a decade or two, they are going to be exorbitantly expensive.
What is available today is the guidelines to improve the Quality of Life of the patients that gives a better care and reasonably increase the life expectancy. The medications/ interventions suggested in the guidelines, steroids, does not suit all patients and are known for their adverse side effects. Though, Ayurveda does not promise to offer a cure, nothing much is known on what ayurveda has to offer for muscular dystrophy, mainly Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The quality of life and life expectancy might be enhanced by this age old medical system. The personalized approach of taking care of every individual patient needs towards good health gives us hope on overall management of good health. The commendable aspect of this approach would be that there would not be any side effects as medications are proven through centuries and they could bring in equal or better quality of life to the affected children.
One year of completion of ayurvedic intervention for the children at MDCRC came to an end in August 2014. Thirty children were on this intervention of which most of them wanted to continue and proceed to the next year. Assessments were done to understand the improvement of quality of life in these children who were on ayurvedic medicines and data has been viewed.
We are extremely thankful to Dr. P.R. Krishnakumarji for having taken it forward to provide our children with free medicines are AVP which has enabled them to come so far. We owe to the Ayra vaiday Trust for this collaborative effort and are highly grateful to them in all ways.
