Referral Centre – DMD & SMA

Molecular Diagnostics, Counseling, Care and Research Centre located at Kurinji Hospital, Coimbatore was approved as referral centre for Genetic Diagnosis for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and the order was given in November 2012 from Health and Family Welfare (E2) Department vide GO number 309.

The director of Medical Education, Director of Medical and Rural Health Services and Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine are requested to instruct the Deans, Medical Superintendents, Chief Medical Officers, Joint Director of Health Services and deputy Director of Health Services to utilize the above Referral Centre for the genetic diagnosis to the fullest extent, free of cost for all children attending the Government Hospital and the Primary Health Centres.

Ever since then, MDCRC has been catering to the needs of the identified children to the fullest satisfaction for genetic diagnosis and also offering genetic counseling to the parents of the affected children which is the best way to prevent it from passing on to the next generation.
